Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a very common eye condition that affect around 60% of people over the age of 60. There are 1.5 million cataract surgeries performed each year and although complications can occur like in any surgery, most of them are very successful and have improved lives. These days, site can be improved even more after cataract surgery because advanced intraocular lenses are available. The first step in cataract surgery is choosing the right surgeon. The surgeon will speak with you about choosing the right lens implant for your specific situation.

Before surgery, your eye will be cleaned, dilated and numbed by using a topical anesthetic. A small incision is made and then an ultrasonic device will be inserted into the small incision. The device pulverizes the cataract and then can be removed from the eye. A foldable intraocular lens will then be implanted into the original incision. This new lens replaces the natural lens and will stay in place in your eye. The small incision will heal naturally without the need for stitches.
