Cataracts are a very common eye condition that affects around 60% of people over the age of 60. There are 1.5 million cataract surgeries performed each year and although complications can occur like in any surgery, most of them are very successful and have improved lives. These days, sight can be improved even more after cataract surgery. This is because today, we have advanced intraocular lens technology.

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a procedure that removes the natural lens inside of the eye and replaces it with an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is widely accepted as a safe and routine procedure, not to mention it is one of the most performed procedures in the world. During cataract surgery, Dr. Cheema will create several small incisions in your cornea. Through these incisions, Dr. Cheema is able to remove the cataract-affected lens. Once the natural lens is removed, an IOL of your choosing will be positioned in its place.

The first step in cataract surgery is choosing the right surgeon. The surgeon will speak with you about choosing the right IOL for your specific needs. There are many different types of IOLs on the market today, so you are sure to find one that suits you and your lifestyle. Before surgery, your eye will be cleaned, dilated and numbed by using a topical anesthetic. A small incision is made and then an ultrasonic device will be inserted into the small incision. The device pulverizes the cataract and then can be removed from the eye. A foldable intraocular lens will then be implanted into the original incision. This new lens replaces the natural lens and will stay in place in your eye. The small incision will heal naturally without the need for stitches.

The Recovery

Before you leave the Surgical Center, Dr. Cheema will place protective eyewear over your eyes. This will help protect your eye from sunlight and any potential injury. You may feel slight irritation once the anesthetic wears off, but it is important not to touch your eye. Use your eye drops and medications as directed. It is not uncommon for your vision to fluctuate as your eye adjusts to the new IOL. While many people report improved vision immediately after surgery, some people wait a few weeks to see improvements. Either way, full results will generally not appear for a few weeks.
